google.co.uk from abroad: why the domain isn't enough
Typing google.co.uk from outside Britain doesn't give you British results. Since 2017 Google has served results for the country it detects you in, whatever domain you type, so the .co.uk address is mostly a label.
Real UK results are their own world: rankings favour UK sites, prices appear in pounds, spelling flips to en-GB, and the local pack is built around British towns and postcodes. If you run UK campaigns or track UK rankings from abroad, your own browser is showing you the wrong country.
iSearchFrom routes your query through a real UK connection and opens the live page a searcher in London, Manchester or Edinburgh gets: the same ads, the same local pack, the same rankings, shareable as a link.
Google UK Search: what it actually shows
Rankings, ads, and local packs change with every country and city. Checking from your own location tells you nothing about what the United Kingdom sees.
- Served from google.co.uk, not your local Google
- Results and ads in English
- Geo-targeted ads and shopping results
- City-level local pack and map results

What makes Google in the UK different
The .co.uk domain is only a label
Google has ranked by detected location instead of domain since October 2017. Visiting google.co.uk from abroad still returns results for your own country; only a UK location unlocks the UK page.
en-GB spelling and formats
Results prefer British spelling like 'optimise' and 'colour', dates run day first, and Shopping prices appear in pounds with UK delivery options.
UK consent dialog first
UK searchers pass a consent dialog under UK GDPR before their first results, and cookie choices subtly change which personalised elements appear on the page.
UK advertisers and UK offers
Text ads, Shopping carousels and comparison listings are auctioned per country. The brands, prices, and promotions on a UK page rarely match what the same query shows elsewhere.
Local packs built on UK geography
The map pack runs on British towns and postcodes. London, Manchester and Edinburgh return visibly different packs, and 'near me' queries only make sense from inside the country.
Search from specific UK cities, not just the country
Britain is small on a map and large in the SERP. Local packs, service queries, and much of the ad inventory change between cities, so a UK check should name a city, not just a country.
Start with one city in the free tool, then compare a second. Rankings that hold in London and slip in Manchester are the usual first clue that a campaign is really several local ones.

VPNs reroute you, URL parameters only hint, and asking a local doesn't scale. iSearchFrom recreates the real search: actual city, language and device.
| Capability | Recommended | VPN | URL params | Ask a local |

| Real google.co.uk results | Yes | Partial | Partial | Yes |
| City-level accuracy | Yes | No | No | Partial |
| No setup or installs | Yes | No | Yes | No |

| Repeatable for QA & audits | Yes | Partial | No | No |

URL parameters like &gl= are only hints, and Google increasingly ignores them. VPNs give you one exit city, the wrong language, and captchas.
Frequently asked questions
Google ranks by the location it detects, not the domain you typed. If you are outside the UK, both google.com and google.co.uk return results for your actual country. To see the UK page you need a UK location, which is what iSearchFrom simulates.
Run your query above with a UK city selected. iSearchFrom loads the page through a real British connection, so you get the live google.co.uk results a local sees, including UK ads and the local pack.
Yes, often visibly. The local pack, 'near me' results and many ads are assembled per city. National rankings overlap more, but service and shopping queries can reshuffle between cities.
No. A VPN gives you one fixed exit city, frequently triggers captchas, and doesn't set the right language or device. iSearchFrom requests the page from the exact UK city, language and device you choose.
Ranking checks are only comparable when location, language, device and personalisation match. Your client searches from their own city with their own history. Simulate their city and device here to see the same page they do.
